Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Hanwell

Purpose: This Health and Safety policy sets out the standards and procedures adopted by Gardeners Hanwell and associated gardening teams to protect staff, clients and the public while delivering professional garden maintenance and landscaping. The document outlines roles, responsibilities and practical controls so that every member of our gardening workforce understands how to minimise risk while carrying out grounds maintenance, hedge cutting, lawn care and planting projects across our service area.

Scope: The policy applies to all Hanwell gardeners, subcontractors, visitors and volunteers involved in garden work on private, communal and commercial properties. It covers routine tasks such as pruning, lawn mowing, planting, pest control and waste handling, plus occasional higher-risk activities like tree work, use of powered tools and chemical application.

Policy Statement: Gardeners in Hanwell will take every reasonable step to ensure a safe working environment. We are committed to preventing injury and ill health through hazard identification, appropriate training, safe systems of work and the provision of suitable personal protective equipment (PPE). All teams must follow this policy alongside established operational procedures and any client site rules.

Responsibilities

Management: Managers and supervisors are required to carry out risk assessments, allocate resources for safety, provide induction and ongoing training, and maintain records of incidents and controls. They will ensure that safety information is communicated to all team members and that work is planned to reduce exposure to hazards.

Employees and Operatives: Every operative, including apprentices and seasonal workers, must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must use PPE, follow method statements, report defects or near misses and stop work when conditions are unsafe. Hanwell garden operatives are expected to cooperate with managers to implement safe working practices.

Contractors and Visitors:

Visiting contractors and clients must comply with site-specific safety instructions. Subcontractors engaged for specialist tasks, such as arboriculture or pesticide application, should provide evidence of competence, insurance and their own safety arrangements before work begins.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems: Regular risk assessments identify hazards including manual handling, slips and trips, machinery entanglement, noise, vibration and exposure to chemicals.
